the lonely island are a comedy trio of andy samberg, akiva schaffer, and jorma taccone. they all met at their junior high in berkeley, california and became closer in high school.
they named themselves after the apartment they shared at the time in la. the apartment complex was very isolated, surrounded by roads and buildings, so it was considered "lonely."
when they graduated high school, the three collectively went their separate ways. but of course, later on they found each other again. five years later they reunited and decided they wanted to do comedy together.
from 2001-5, they were building their brand and creating a lot. they made dozens of short videos for their website including music videos such as ka-blamo and stork patrol, as well as short sketches and even two episodes of a self-titled show.
they wrote for the 2005 mtv movie awards where they met jimmy fallon, an snl cast member at the time. fallon liked them immediately and suggested they audition for the show, putting a good word in for them to lorne michaels.
in 2005, they also made the pilot of awesometown, their own sketch comedy show. fox never aired the pilot so it was never picked up, but the 20-minute treasure remains a fan favorite.
following jimmy fallon's advice, the three auditioned for saturday night live. as we know now, they got in! andy was hired as a cast member and writer while jorm and kiv were both writers.
they created over a hundred snl digital shorts which are remembered as iconic today amongst snl and lonely island fans alike.
their first major hit was their second ever digital short lazy sunday, a rap song about going to see the first narnia film. the three teamed up to write it with cast member chris parnell, who performed it with andy. when andy, jorm, and kiv woke up the sunday after it aired (notably they woke up around 6 P.M. according to andy; "it was a late night"), they saw the video had been posted online with over half a million views! this was the start of an era <3
in vancouver during the summer of 2006, they filmed hot rod, directed by kiv and starring andy and jorm! in the film, andy's character rod kimble is an amateur stuntman who must jump 15 buses, raising the money to save his stepdad and earn his respect.

the film is often regarded as the lonely island's best work since it features all of their talents: writing comedy, making songs, and acting. even if it wasn't a box office smash hit, popstar is the funniest movie ever made!
popstar: never stop never stopping (2016) is their mockumentary, documenting the lives and complicated friendship of the style boyz. andy, jorm, and kiv wrote and produced the film together while jorm and kiv directed.
the unauthorized bash brothers experience (2019) is a half-hour long netflix comedy special/visual poem written by the three and starring andy and kiv.
it centers jose canseco and markgwire, known as the bash brothers, who play for the oakland athletics. the musical touches on the pair's struggles with the game, pressure, and spotlight.
the film broke a record at the 2020 sundance film festival, becoming the highest selling movie in history at the festival--it was sold to hulu for $17,500,000.69 (the $0.69 was their idea, of course).
palm springs (2020) is a film produced by the three, starring andy and cristin milioti. andy's character nyles and cristin's character sarah are in a time loop, forced to face themselves, their past mistakes, and each other.
